• An aurora is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic)regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere).
  
  
  
• On our earth, the aurora phenomenon occurs at the north and south poles.  In the northern hemisphere the aurora borealis is commonly known as the “northern lights”.  In the southern hemisphere the aurora australis is also know as the “southern lights”. This phenomenon occurs when particles in solar winds are pulled into the atmosphere by the earth’s magnetic force.  The aurora is said to be continuously occurring between 100km and 500km above the earth’s surface.
• The area directly beneath each aurora oval is the best place to see the aurora most often.  The cities located under the northern oval include Yellowknife, Canada; Fairbanks, Alaska and Lapland, Norway.  Among these places, Yellowknife has the least geographical obstructions, such as mountains, to provide a high percentage of clear weather in the winter which results in a high viewing probability.
•  The best  viewing seasons of Aurora to be from mid-August to the end of September and from mid-November to mid-April. In Yellowknife, it is possible to see the aurora approximately 240 days of the year and when there are no obstructions such as heavy clouds, they almost always appear.
  
• The colours of the aurora range from the most common whitish-greens, to pinks, then to the rarer reds, blues and so on.  Red is difficult to recognize with the naked eye, and a deep red colour is so unusual that many people who live in the north have never seen it.  It comes in a variety of shapes: curtains, ruffles, bow, band, whirlpool, corona, but there are never two auroras of the same colour and shape. Finally, there is the aurora break-up comes with amazing speed and makes the night sky dance with awesome beauty. However, fast moving, colourful aurora can often last only a short time of around 10 minutes.

• Natural calamities are devastating natural forces. These forces have a great impact on animal kingdom and most of the animals don't have a happy ending.......Except this baby hippopotamus.
• A baby hippopotamus named Owen managed to survive a tsunami on the Kenyan coast, but his mother did not.
• However the baby found an adaptive parent in a tortoise in the Lafarge park in Mumbasa.

• The duo eat, swim and sleep together.
• Owen comes to bite any stranger who tries to come close to the tortoise......This shows how protective Owen is and the level of love and affection between the two.

After 100 years, this town will finally get sunlight:

Rjukan, Norway: Residents in Rjukan, a Norwegian industrial town nestled in a narrow valley in central Norway, will get some sunlight on the town square from this September, breaking ahistory of over 100 years of having no sunlight in winter.
If everything goes as planned, sunlight will be beamed onto the square in front of the town hall from the three mirrors erected 450 meters high on the mountainside, reported Xinhua.
The installation of the mirrors, which began on July 1, 2013, has already been completed. 

On Monday, workers and technicians were giving the five-million-kroner project a final touch. 
For decades, residents of Rjukan, which is part of the Tinn municipality, the Telemark county, have being using the nearby cable car Krossobanen to get to the mountain top for sunshine in wintertime. 
Karin Roe, chief of the Rjukan tourist office, said that people in the town will continue to use cable cars in winter although activities on the square are expected to increase. 
The idea of building a huge mirror to reflect sunlight onto the town was almost as old as the town. 

When he started to build the town in 1907, Sam Eyde, a co-founder of the Norwegian industrial giant Norsk Hydro, took to his heart the idea so that workers could have some sunlight in wintertime, said Rune Loedoeen, chief of the town. "But at that time, we did not have the technology. So instead a cable car was built for the purpose," said Loedoeen. After five years of debate, the town council finally came up with a decision this year to invest 5 million Norwegian kroner ($823,000) to build the mirrors.

Chinese man builds his own bionic arms:
Sun Jifa, a farmer in China, had his life changed forever when an explosive he planned on using for fishing went off prematurely. He lost his arms and when he couldn’t afford high-end, hospital-made prosthetics he opted for a cheaper set. Finding those to be less than acceptable, Sun started building his own pair of arms, which he currently wears. It’s an incredible story of ingenuity and personal strength.

After creating his own pair of arms Sun started building others. Selling functional prosthetic arms for under $500, he saves people from buying the poor quality ones he was forced to use and helps those who are unable to afford professionally-made ones which can cost up to ten times the price. To date Sun has sold around 1000 arms, which means he’s been able to help hundreds of people rebuild their lives after a catastrophe.

While the arms look rudimentary compared to what you may expect (especially once the term “bionic” gets thrown around) the video shows that they are fully functional and don’t hinder their owner from doing manual labor or precise mechanical work (such as making more arms). Sun noted that “[The left arm] transfers power from the natural movement of my elbow into the finger, allowing it to grab and hold… rotating the two bones that I have left in this arm allows my right hand to open and close,” giving us some idea of how they operate.
The mechanisms inside the arms appear to be simple, functional, and versatile, so while the arms lack the life-like nature of the prosthetics produced by a major firm they are still an incredible achievement. For his effort Sun Jifa has created a thriving business, become local celebrity, and earned international media attention.

In 1963, during a simple renovation in the town of Derinkuyu, a cave wall was opened, revealing a passage way to an underground city, thousands of years old, extending more than 280 feet deep. Derinkuyu is 13 stories, with 15,000 little ventilation shafts that bring air to even the deepest of levels. The number of rock rooms that were found could hold over 20,000 Men Women and Children. There is evidence of Religious centers, store rooms, wine presses and stables for livestock. Derinkuyu is the largest excavated underground city in Turkey and is part of anetwork of several underground complexes found across Cappadocia.

Now, smart pen that vibrates when you make spelling error. Lernstift is a regular pen with real ink, but inside is a special motion sensor and a small battery-powered Linux computer with a WiFi chip. Together those parts allow the pen to recognise specific movements, letter shapes and know a wide assortment of words. If it senses bad letter formation or messy handwriting, it will vibrate.

Cube shaped watermelons in Japan

TWENTY YEARS AGO A JAPANESE FARMER CREATED CUBED WATERMELONS !!

People love watermelon, but their shape is a pain. They roll around in the fridge or on the counter. People have been struggling with the problem for years. Attempting to cut the watermelon can be dangerous and difficult, if you haven't learned proper watermelon cutting techniques.

An innovative farmer on the island of Shikoku off the southwestern coast of Japan came up with a solution to the watermelon dilemma.

He came up with the idea to make cube-shaped watermelons that would easily fit in the refrigerator and be stored. Farmers grew the watermelons in glass boxes and the fruit automatically assumed the same shape.

Today the cubed melons are grown, hand-picked, and shipped all over Japan. The special melons are more partial to the wealthy and fashion conscious citizens of Tokyo and Osaka,Japan. Each melon sells for 10,000 yen, which equals to about $83 per watermelon! It is double or triple the amount of a normal watermelon in Japan.

China "The Unofficial Mother Of Traffic Jams."

• China is crowned as the unofficial 'host' of "the mother of all traffic jams". On way back in august 2010 there was a longest traffic lasted for 12 days and stretched for more than 62 miles(100 km).

• Traffic on the china national highway 110 had grown 40 percent every year in the previous several years, making the highway chronically congested.The traffic volume at the time of the incident was 60% more than the designated capacity.
  
• The cause of the traffic jam was reported to be a spike in traffic by heavy trucks heading to Beijing, along with National Highway 110's maintenance work that began five days later. The road construction which reduced the road capacity by 50% contributed heavily to the traffic jam and was not due to be completed until mid-September. Police reported that minor breakdowns and accidents were compounding the problem.
  
• Greatly increased coal production in Inner Mongolia shipped to Beijing along this route because of the lack of railway capacity also overloaded the highway. 602 million tons of coal were mined and shipped in 2009; production was expected to rise to 730 million tons in 2010. An additional factor is efforts by overloaded trucks which lack proper paperwork for their cargo to avoid a coal quality supervision and inspection station on  china national highway.
  
• Locals near the highway sold various goods like water, instant noodles, and cigarettes at inflated prices to the stranded drivers. A bottle of water normally cost 1 yuan, but on the highway it was sold for 10 yuan. Drivers also complained that the price of instant noodles had more than tripled. Some vendors created mobile stores on bicycles.

• Why is one person’s experience so different from another’s?  Why do certain thoughts affect certain people a certain way, and have remarkably different consequences for others?  These curiosities and complexities point the way for scientific analysis of so-called immaterial things like the soul.
• People say mythology holds even more truth than non-fiction.  That’s because it speaks to the underlying reality of human existence, rather than telling the story exactly how it is. Another example is parental love.
