- Slavery occurs when one person exercises the ‘right’ of ownership over a person. (Slavery Convention of 1926) OR Slavery can be defined as forced to work without pay under threat of violence and unable to walk away.
- Slavery still exists. It is estimated that there are about 27 million slaves in the world today. (International Labour Organisation ILO Global Report, The Cost of Coercion – (2009) pp 1 & 65; Free the Slaves, About Slavery: Modern Slavery, 2012)
- The majority of slaves can be found in India and in African countries.
- The victims most vulnerable are women and children. Children in particular are sold, bonded, trafficked, subjected to commercial sexual exploitation, recruited into armed conflicts and forced to work as domestic workers. (antislavery.org Fact Sheet: Slavery Past and Present).
- Slaves work in fi elds, brothels, homes, mines, restaurants—anywhere slave owners can feed their greed.
- $90 is the average cost of a human slave sold around the world.(www.freetheslaves.net).
- Slave holders use many terms to avoid the word SLAVERY like debt labour, bonded labour, human trafficking and indentured servitude.
- Every minute two children are sold into slavery. (Innocence Atlanta).
